If you're returning to India from abroad and bringing luggage with you, it's crucial to understand the new customs regulations. The new Baggage Rules 2026, effective February 2026, replace the old regulations.
These changes aim to provide some relief to travelers, but also to ensure stricter enforcement. In such circumstances, even a slight negligence could result in a hefty fine.
Passengers are now granted greater exemptions than before. Indian travelers arriving by air or sea can bring in goods worth up to ₹75,000 without customs duty. This limit was previously ₹50,000.
However, this exemption applies only to personal goods, not business goods. For foreign tourists, the limit has been set at ₹25,000. The rules for crew members remain the same, with only ₹2,500 exempt.
You can bring so much gold
A major change has been made to the rules regarding gold jewelry. Previously, the limit was based on value, but now it's linked to weight. Female travelers can bring up to 40 grams of gold jewelry, and male travelers up to 20 grams, duty-free.
However, this exemption is only available to Indians or people of Indian origin who are returning after spending at least one year abroad. Note that gold coins, bars, or biscuits are not included in this exemption and must be declared separately.
The government has also introduced a digital system to simplify customs procedures. Passengers can now submit their baggage information online in advance, saving time at the airport and reducing lengthy procedures.
This has also made inspections faster and more transparent. Choosing the right channel is also crucial. If you have goods that are subject to duty, you should go through the red channel.
However, if you have nothing to declare, the green channel is appropriate. If a passenger violates the rules and conceals their luggage, their baggage may be confiscated and they may be fined up to three times the duty. In serious cases, legal action is also possible.
